Go Back in Time to the KZN Battlefields
The stories behind some of South Africa’s most legendary battlefields start here:
Famous battles that changed the course of South Africa’s history…

THE BATTLE OF ISANDLWANA
- Fought on 22 January 1879
- The first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom

THE BATTLE OF RORKE’S DRIFT
- Took place during the Anglo-Zulu War
- Fought on the same day as the nearby Battle of Isandlwana
- Fighting the Zulu army of King Cetshwayo, the British army suffered the most humiliating defeat in its history.

THE SIEGE OF LADYSMITH
- Began when the Boers cut the railway and telegraph lines on 2 November 1899
- General Joubert pushed General White’s army into Ladysmith and laid siege to it at the beginning of the South African War
- The attack lasted for 118 days – the shortest of the three major sieges in South African history
- Suffering during the siege was intense given the shortage of provisions.

THE BATTLE OF ELANDSLAAGTE
- Occurred during the South African War of 1899-1902
- Played out within the boundaries of what is now Nambiti Private Game Reserve
- The story of this battle fascinating for several reasons, including a raging thunderstorm, numerous foreign fighters, a cavalry charge, the use of modern rifles, controversy over a flag of truce and tales of incredible bravery
